# Claude Code

Install the CodePanel plugin for Claude Code: the MCP server and review-loop skills in one command, for the terminal, IDE and desktop app.

One install covers the terminal, the IDE extensions and the desktop app, which share settings.

> [!NOTE]
> Do the [Quickstart](/docs/quickstart) up to adding a provider key first. Claude Code cannot add provider keys or change spending limits.

## Setup

### 1. Install the plugin

```bash tab="Terminal"
claude plugin install codepanel --marketplace Code-Panel-AI/codepanel-tools
```

```bash tab="Terminal (before 2.1.292)"
claude plugin marketplace add Code-Panel-AI/codepanel-tools
claude plugin install codepanel@codepanel
```

```text tab="In a session"
/plugin marketplace add Code-Panel-AI/codepanel-tools
/plugin install codepanel@codepanel
```

```text tab="Desktop app"
/plugin marketplace add Code-Panel-AI/codepanel-tools
```

`--marketplace` needs Claude Code 2.1.292 or later. In the desktop app, add the marketplace once, then open **+ → Plugins → Add plugin** and choose **codepanel**. A plugin installed in the terminal also appears in the app's local sessions.

### 2. Sign in

In a new session, run `/mcp`, choose `plugin:codepanel:codepanel`, then **Authenticate**. On CodePanel's consent page, sign in with GitHub, untick any permissions you don't want to give, and choose **Approve**.

### 3. Set up the repository

In a session in your repository, run:

```text
/codepanel:codepanel-setup
```

It writes `.codepanel/rules.md` from your `CLAUDE.md` or `AGENTS.md`, adds the review loop to them, and opens one pull request. It runs only when you ask; [Repository setup](/docs/agent-setup) shows its prompt.

## Verify

Ask Claude: "Use the CodePanel whoami tool." It answers with your GitHub account and its permissions. Then: "Read CodePanel's review of owner/name#123." If either fails, see [Troubleshooting](/docs/coding-agents#troubleshooting).

## Share with your team

Commit `.mcp.json` at the repository root with the URL only. Each person signs in with their own GitHub account, so ratings are recorded as theirs.

```json title=".mcp.json"
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "codepanel": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://codepanel.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

For the skills, copy `plugins/codepanel/skills/` from the [codepanel-tools repository](https://github.com/Code-Panel-AI/codepanel-tools) into `.claude/skills/`. Or run the setup skill once: it writes the review loop into `CLAUDE.md`, which everyone's Claude reads.

## What the plugin adds

| Name | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| `codepanel` skill | Runs the review loop on its own when Claude works on a pull request CodePanel reviews. Run it by hand with `/codepanel:codepanel`. |
| `/codepanel:codepanel-setup` | Sets a repository up (step 3). |
| `codepanel` MCP server | The tools in [MCP server](/docs/mcp-server). |

## Update the plugin

Third-party marketplaces do not update on their own:

```bash
claude plugin update codepanel@codepanel
```

Or turn on auto-update under `/plugin` → **Marketplaces**.

## MCP server only

Without the skills. With **Sign in**, authenticate from `/mcp` afterwards.

```bash tab="Sign in"
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user codepanel https://codepanel.ai/mcp
```

```bash tab="Token"
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user codepanel https://codepanel.ai/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer cpk_..."
```

The plugin's server always points at codepanel.ai.
